I’m watching Episode IV. Alec Guiness is the only truly good actor in this film. Even George Lucas couldn’t ruin his performance. I remember reading about how, when they were filming in Tunisia, Guiness was the consummate professional. Everybody was bitching about the conditions, but he showed up every morning ready to work. He kept his mouth shut and did his job.
Also, I wonder if this film would have been nearly as successful without John Williams’ extraordinary score.

Harrison Ford and Peter Cushing also nailed their roles IMO. Harrison especially REALLY did a good job of embodying who he is supposed to be.

ha - my wife and I were watching the old Episode 1 and just laughing about how really terrible it is... writing is just sh!t.

The essence of writing is rewriting. Lucas was fortunate he had good editors. Otherwise, this could have been a disaster.

Okay, do you mean the prequel Ep. 1 or the original 1977 film with Guiness?

prequel ep 1 - Jarjar Binks and all!
No, I have much better memories of the original 1977 film - waited outside the theater with my mother to get tickets and was completely blown away.

I was watching /Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy/ and /Smiley’s People/ again recently. Guiness is just a riveting deadpan performance through both. You can see tremendous passion welling up in Smiley at times but the voice never goes above mezzo-forte.

He has what I think is the clunkiest moment. Watch him after he is shaken by the destruction of Alderaan. It’s really awkward and you see the “acting.” Otherwise, of course, he’s perfect.

My god, those prequels are so bad....
I have lost count of how many times I’ve seen Ep IV, starting in 77 and through all the stupid revisions.

Tu nes of Glory or GTFO.

Blame it on Lucas’ shitty directing.

I’ve read that he was always a bit embarrassed by it. That he had taken job just for the money, and (to his mind at least) half-assed it because it was a silly scifi/samurai/western mashup, and then when it was a huge hit, he was left in the position that his most famous role was one he saw as a mediocre performance in an mainstream action movie, instead of something more impressive.

I didn’t know that one, sounds great. Added to my Netflix queue (yes I still get DVDs by mail)

Oh, I do. That should not have been the take used.

I can see that. Watching it now, I was wondering how Lucas landed him for the role.

My brother decided it was time for his 5 year old son to watch Star Wars for the first time this week. He was glued to the screen.
My favorite moments:
During the opening scene with Vader he grabbed onto his dad throughout and asked after, “Who’s in there? He’s scary.”
When Vader kills Obi-Wan heard him whimper “nooooo.”
Then after the movie we asked him what he thought.
“That. Was. COOOOOL! Can we watch it again? ”
Empire is going to screw him up so bad. I can’t wait.

Just don't show him the prequels.

He needs to be a little older for Empire, maybe? That is ... a wallop.
Also I ’m with “Don’t show him the prequels” guy

No, it would not. That score was a key to success.

Prequels are fine, just don't show him the sequel trilogy, but do show him Rogue One when he's a little older.

“ Who’s in there, he’s scary.”
Next up, The Sandlot.

That was on free to air tv the other night...so turgid and dull. Switched it off once it got to Tatooine...

Truth.
Loved em when I was little but when Vader built C 3P0 as a child. I kinda gave up.

just recently saw an interview with Sir Alec, and he knew Lucas by reputation for American Graffiti.

That was my thought too. I watched those all when first released and thought who is that guy!

I rented(yes at a video rental place ) episode 4 with my 4 year old and she was obsessed with Vader for months; 9 months later she still only likes the dark side(now usually she plays as Kyle Ren) . We then watched 5, 1, 2, 3(with a bit of parental intervention because it really ramped up the violence ). Now we are slowing down and re-working through 4, 5, 6. Hoping By the time we make it through she’ll be ready for 7, 8, and eventually 9.

I agree. It took a dopey space opera and made it epic.

Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie since ESB.

That might have been a pretty dicey call before the movie came out.

i guess it was 2 and he got it bummed to 2.5 after the test screening
